G. Mark Gibb was chosen by the Northern Virginia Regional Commission (NVRC) to serve as the Executive Director in April of 1987. He serves as the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for the implementation of plans, studies and projects designated by the Commission.

Mr. Gibb served several years as an Adjunct Professor of Planning with the University of Virginia, Northern Virginia Center.

Prior to his appointment as the Director of the NVRC, Mr. Gibb served as the Executive Director of the Kern Council of Governments (Kern COG), located in Bakersfield, California. While in California, Mr. Gibb also served as an Adjunct Professor of Public Administration, California State College at Bakersfield.

Other relevant experience includes serving as an Administrative Analyst for the North Bakersfield (California) Recreation and Park District in 1978; a Community Planner for the Mountainland Association of Governments (Provo, Utah), 1977; and as an Administrative Intern for the Arlington County (Virginia) Manager’s Office in 1976.

Mr. Gibb received his Master’s in Public Administration degree from Brigham Young University in 1978. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1976 from the same university, majoring in Geography and International Relations.

Mr. Gibb is the former President of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA), and a former member of the ASPA National Council for the Mid-Atlantic Region.

In addition, Mr. Gibb serves on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions, the Community Appearance Alliance of Northern Virginia, and the Northern Virginia Chapter of the United Way.

Mr. Gibb is a graduate of Leadership Fairfax, Class of 1989, as well as the Senior Executive Institute conducted by the Center for Public Service, University of Virginia. In conjunction with the Leadership Fairfax, he is involved in the Northern Virginia Special Olympics Program and currently serves as Chairman of its Public Relations Committee.

Mr. Gibb is a native of Arlington, Virginia. He lived in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for two years while serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and speaks fluent Portuguese. He is married to the former Claudia Jordan and has four children. Mr. Gibb and his family currently reside in Herndon, Virginia.
